Larry the Free Software Guy, a.k.a. Larry Cafiero, 51, is the editor/publisher of Open Source and Free Software Reporter — reappearing online in the summer 2009 — and runs Redwood Digital Research in Felton, California. While he fears no command line, he is relatively new to the free software movement, having been an advocate for free software since fall of 2006. Toward the end of 2006, he had an epiphany or satori regarding the social, philosophical, political and economic benefits of using free software and open source software — particularly the former — on his favored hardware (which was the Mac PowerPC platform, although he has warmed up to Intel machines as of late), and started a magazine and Web site to share his findings with everyone. Larry’s latest brush with fame was being the Green Party’s candidate for Insurance Commissioner in California in the 2006 election (270,218 votes, 3.2 percent).

Hello Lary,
Ran across your site from Good Morning Silicon Valley. I applaud your efforts to broaden the acceptance of Linux in your community. I work for Canonical, the parent of Ubuntu and just wanted to reach out to you to offer assistance, if you need any.
The article didn’t say which flavor you are promoting, but if it’s Ubuntu, I would love to help with you project, and I’m just over the hill from you.
Let me know if there anything we can do!
Thanks,
-Charles

Hi Larry,
I’m a Danish journalist based in San francisco. I read the story about you in San Jose Merc. I would like to do a story on your Linux-effort as well.
Will that be possible?

Hey Larry – ya grabbed a great moniker before I claimed it!
I’ve been a *nix/Linux/Open Source FOSS zealot for over 10 plus years on the other side fo the hill from you.(Silly Valley for those out of the area) Although, I did attend UCSC (GO SLUGS!) back in the 80’s. Glad there is a “Larry the Free Software Guy” but sad it’s not ME!
Friends would think that it is me if they saw the link to the blog. I would love to help contribute if possible sometime.
Best,
-Yet another “Larry the (Open Source/FOSS/Linux) GUY”
