About Larry

lcmc21.jpgLarry the Free Software Guy is Larry Cafiero, 55, who runs Redwood Digital Research in Felton, California, which provides Free/Open Source Software solutions for the small business/home office environment. He has been an advocate for Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) since the fall of 2006. Toward the end of 2006, he had an epiphany or satori regarding the social, philosophical, political and economic benefits of using FOSS on his favored hardware, which at the time consisted of the Mac PowerPC platform (although he has warmed up to Intel machines as of late). He organized a project to promote GNU/Linux which turned out to be the Lindependence events in Felton, California, in 2008. Larry’s brush with fleeting fame came in 2006 as the Green Party’s candidate for Insurance Commissioner in California (270,218 votes, 3.2 percent).

    Hello Lary,

Ran across your site from Good Morning Silicon Valley. I applaud your efforts to broaden the acceptance of Linux in your community. I work for Canonical, the parent of Ubuntu and just wanted to reach out to you to offer assistance, if you need any.

The article didn’t say which flavor you are promoting, but if it’s Ubuntu, I would love to help with you project, and I’m just over the hill from you.

Let me know if there anything we can do!

    Thanks,

    -Charles

    Hi Larry,

I’m a Danish journalist based in San francisco. I read the story about you in San Jose Merc. I would like to do a story on your Linux-effort as well.

    Will that be possible?

Hey Larry – ya grabbed a great moniker before I claimed it!

I’ve been a *nix/Linux/Open Source FOSS zealot for over 10 plus years on the other side fo the hill from you.(Silly Valley for those out of the area) Although, I did attend UCSC (GO SLUGS!) back in the 80’s. Glad there is a “Larry the Free Software Guy” but sad it’s not ME!

Friends would think that it is me if they saw the link to the blog. I would love to help contribute if possible sometime.

    Best,

-Yet another “Larry the (Open Source/FOSS/Linux) GUY”

Even though I am a die-hard MS user, wouldn’t even touch a Mac. I give you my full support in FOSS. I believe open source is the way to go always.

Larry, started reading your blog not long ago. I think it was a piece you wrote about Crunchbang. I had tried Crunchbang previously and at that time did not feel it was for me. I was wanting something again for my netbook and decided to try it again after you wrote about it. I’m now sold on it since I gave it a better try this time. I’ve bookmarked your blog and have wondered if you got the refridgerator in and kept your temper at the same time?

Hi, Paul — Thanks for the kind words. Yep, got the refrigerator installed and no one died :-) Keep the faith in “The Heart of Dixie” and thanks for using CrunchBang!

Thanks for the reply Larry, I probably shouldn’t have used my last line to make a political statement, I was still frustrated after reading about our state legislature from the local news. My apologies.

Yep, state legislatures can have that effect on people. No worries and no apology necessary, as far as I’m concerned.

    Dear Larry,
It would be nice if you wrote something about http://lpc.opengameart.org (a pixel art and game programming contest) scheduled for 2 months starting June 1st. You could found more at https://www.linux.com/learn/tutorials/563472-gaming-freedom-with-liberated-pixel-cup-contest as well as http://wp.me/pfuZu-zS
